New Families
An orientation session is required for all new families prior to beginning the program. This will typically be held in the early evening in August prior to the start of the academic year. Mid-year starts will schedule an orientation with the Membership person.
Parent Workday
A parent is responsible to work in the classroom based on the number of days a child attends school per week. A parent, whose child attends school two days per week, will typically work in the classroom two days every four weeks. Likewise, a parent whose child attends school three days per week will typically work in the classroom three days in every four week period. However, parent workdays can vary due to the number of days in a month, workday preferences, current enrollment, and the specific needs of the class your child attends. In addition, parents work as “standby” workers at the end of the day, watching children of the working parents while they finish up, generally one time per month.
On a scheduled workday, parents are required to arrive and be ready to participate by 8:20 am. Prior to the other children arriving at 8:30 a.m., the Teacher will discuss the activities planned for the day and share any important information. Therefore, once the other children begin arriving, the Teacher and working parents are prepared to be with the children. This ensures we have supervision in all areas of our school and have extra hands for those children who need special attention as their parents leave.
There are 4 possible working roles in the classroom – cooking, art, inside, outside. For each role, there is an instruction card detailing the work required.
After school finishes at 12:30, the working parent is required to clean and sanitize the school as described in the job role position card. At approximately 1pm, an adult education seminar is held discussing the activities of the day. The day will end by 1:15 pm.
Substitutes
If a parent has a scheduling conflict, it is the individual’s responsibility to find a substitute. The most common solution is to switch shifts with another parent. If you are unable to switch, another solution is to pay a parent ($50/shift) if you are unable to work. We will do our best to provide you with a list of parents/adults willing to trade or to be a paid substitute at the beginning of the school year.
A less common solution is to have a relative work in your stead. However, substitutes must be fingerprinted and have a current TB test on file, like all other working parents. The exception to this rule is in the case of an emergency. A person who has not been fingerprinted may come fill in on a parent’s behalf, but only on a one-time basis. Please speak with the Teacher in this event.
Please note: having someone work at BBCP that is unfamiliar with the school setting, roles and responsibilities and, most important, the children makes it difficult on everyone. Therefore, please make every attempt to find a parent familiar with the school to fill in if the situation arises.
Sibling Non- Enrollment Policy
In order to make the program as rich as possible for enrolled children, other children (siblings or otherwise) are not allowed at school, excluding drop off and pick up times. We do understand there could be an emergency situation where a working adult would have no choice but to bring along a non-enrolled sibling. In such an emergency, the following procedures need to be followed:
• Before arriving at the school, contact the teacher so she can approve the non-enrolled child to be at the school that day.
• Parents agree to pay a $25 fee per non-enrolled child for the day regardless of the number of children on the daily roster who are present. This covers operating expenses.
Note: Only children of preschool age or older may attend with their parent. The Sibling Non-Enrollment Policy does not include siblings younger than 2 years of age.
Standby Shift
For each program, parents are typically required to work one standby shift per month, per child in the program. The standby shift is after school has finished, and provides coverage for the children of the working parents. Standby shift is from 12:20 pm to 1:15 pm.
During the standby shift, the standby parent will be primarily working with the children of the working parents. The children will typically be engaged in outdoor play or at outdoor activity tables, weather permitting.
Adult Education Meetings (General Meetings)
A registered adult family member must attend the scheduled monthly General Meetings.
These meetings are an integral part of the Adult Education component at our school. While they will include school business and/or decisions about our programs, they support learning about child development, helpful information, and learning areas for both adults and children. At least two or three times a year, we will have speakers on relevant topics.
• There is only one General Meeting per month clearly articulated on our calendar.
• Only one absence from the meetings is allowed.
• All other absences must be made up by completing an assigned project approved by the teacher. See Fines and Infractions section for further details.
• The meetings are for adults only; please make arrangements for your children during meeting times (with the exception of infants).
